THE TOP 10 SPORTS TEAMS I LOVE TO HATE

Posted by bigD | September 7, 2008 .

I know, I know. It’s been a long break from blogging. Leave it to football season and finally getting a laptop up north to put things back in motion. With the return of pro, college and mainly high school football (I’m still doing play by play for Port Huron’s varsity sports teams) I’m slowly bringing this blog back and what a way to get it going again! I dislike (hate is too strong a word at times) many sports teams out there. Who doesn’t? Rather then build up teams like the usual I decided to take a different approach this time. With that in mind, here are my top 10 sports teams that I don’t like…

    10. MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS – They are here only because they are the state rivalry of my beloved Maize and Blue but in reality it’s hard to crap on “Sparty” when normally State doesn’t beat Michigan anyway. I have to admit that as long as Michigan isn’t on the other side, sometimes I even root for MSU. The way Michigan opened up last week vs. Utah it might be an indication that this could finally be the year the Spartans win the battle of Michigan. They barely make my top 10 simply because if you’re a true die hard fan of Michigan, you can’t truthfully say you’re a fan of the Spartans too, can you?

9. MONTREAL CANADIENS – They’ve won more cups then I can count and that’s more then enough reason for me to have them crack my list. If you aren’t a fan of the most successful franchises in sports you generally hate them. It’s a rule. At least, with me it is. Call it jealousy or whatever. I just can’t watch a Habs game. I will say this though…they have the greatest fans on the face of the Earth. If only the Expos would have had support like this.

8. CHICAGO WHITE SOX – I can’t stand Ozzie Guillen, his racist comments and quite frankly, his all around act, period. If he wasn’t so successful, surely GM – Kenny Williams would have kicked his ass out the door by now. The ChiSox always stick it to the Tigers which is heartbreaking enough, but I think this organization is run by a bunch of clowns and their anything goes philosophy is so fake as far as I am concerned. If they weren’t winning you can bet the antics of Guillen and his band of fruitcakes wouldn’t be allowed to go on. No wonder Frank Thomas wanted out of town.

7. USC TROJANS – Pete Carroll is an exceptional coach and he has a great program. I just can’t stand USC for basically the jealousy factor and also for the fact that this is the only team out of the PAC 10 that actually recruits well. Can no team out west match USC’s recruits ever? Come on PAC 10. THIS IS GETTING SICKENING!!!

6. ANY TEAM WITH SHAQ ON IT – He was a tremendously talented youngster with the Orlando Magic and I actually enjoyed watching him then. Boy did it ever go downhill from there. Shaq became a big, loudmouth jerk when he hit LA and ended up being nothing more then a whiny brat along with Kobe Bryant. Whine, whine, whine. The 2 of them should have been forced to wear oversized diapers on the court in LA. No one would have noticed the difference anyway. Shaq always had something to say to anyone who would listen and most of the time it was just pointless, offensive or just plain not welcome. Some found it entertaining and humorous. I found it nauseating. I STILL DO. His move to Miami made me like him even less and the best part about Shaq being with Phoenix is that he can’t win a ring now to save his life. Enough said. I’ve already wasted enough time on Shaq to last a lifetime. I hope he never wins again.

5. ANY NCAA FLORIDA TEAM - I have too many friends who are fans of the Gators and I’ve never liked the Miami Hurricanes. Florida State used to be dominant but as more schools recruit out of Florida and steal their recruits there just aren’t enough of them to go around and the Florida teams seem to struggle now because of it. Urban Meyer will always have a good program but ever since he dumped on Michigan I will forever dislike the Florida program and I’ve had just about enough of Tebow this and Tebow that. Hopefully someone will step up and take the Heisman out of Florida this year. All in all I simply can’t cheer for any Florida team. In the Ohio State - Maurice Clarrett days I even almost brought myself to cheer for OSU in the big bowl game a few years ago for the National Championship vs. Miami. That’s how much I couldn’t stand Miami or any Florida team for that matter. Come on Big D…ALMOST CHEERING FOR THE BUCKEYES? I know… pathetic isn’t it? That says it all right there.

4. TORONTO BLUE JAYS – Out of all the teams I admired growing up, the Tiger teams of the 80’s were my #1 favorite. And it was always Toronto that gave Detroit their biggest rivalry at that time. That plus I couldn’t stand Mr. Perma-Smile – George Bell either and I guess the dislike for the Jays just continued to grow over the years. I can remember them winning the World Series in 1992 and 93 and I wouldn’t even leave the house because I was so upset. I used the term “HIBERNATION” because that’s all I wanted to do when I watched Joe Carter hit that walk off HR in 93 off of Mitch “Wild Thing” Williams. Nowadays, I don’t care who wins in baseball as long as the Yankees, White Sox or even the Toronto Blue Jays DON’T!

3. TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS – Although they have great fans, if Toronto ever won the Stanley Cup you’d never hear the end of it. No folks, I am more then happy with the Maple Leafs not even making the playoffs. I hope it continues. What am I saying? This is the Maple Leafs we’re talking about here. OF COURSE IT WILL CONTINUE!

2. NEW YORK YANKEES – Again, this team has/had too many World Series championships to count and too many spoiled rotten players that I just never liked. Take Jeter for example. Talk about a spoiled mama’s boy. These fans don’t appreciate Alex Rodriguez either. They can “BOO” him all they like. They are unappreciative and if baseball was fair AT ALL, gutless commish, Bud Selig would push harder then ever for a hard salary cap. We know that will never happen though since it’s believed that Yankee success is best for baseball. But is it really? Wouldn’t fan interest be sparked a little by a small market team winning more often? So in other words, the Yankees can go attempt to buy all of their success year after year with no limitations meanwhile teams like Kansas City continue to suffer because they can’t sign free agents so they get out-bid by the richest organization alive? How is that fair? All I can say is LONG LIVE TAMPA BAY. The feel good story of the 2008 season slam dunks the Yankees and I couldn’t be happier for the Rays. I hope it continues in the future. The problem is it won’t because there is no end to the Yankees spending. Why would there be? There’s hardly any rule against it. GO TAMPA!

1. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES – As far as I am concerned there are 2 lists here. The first list has OSU from 1-10 and then there’s this list. My dislike for them is obvious. If you are a Michigan fan you’re an OSU hater. It’s that easy. That’s not to say I don’t respect the ability of the Buckeyes and the amazing coaching/recruiting job that Jim Tressel has done (Bring back John Cooper, please). But this OSU dominance over Michigan has GOT TO STOP. This is by far the greatest rivalry in all of sports as far as I am concerned for many reasons. The fact that the game is played every year on the final week of the college football season and it always means EVERYTHING to 1 or most of the time to BOTH Michigan and OSU makes it great. I just always found OSU to be classless. They always seem to talk more then Michigan and they always seem to take this game to the next level. This season should be no different but the rivalry itself dates so far back. When Woody Hayes ran up the score on Michigan in the late 60’s yet still went for 2 it drove Michigan crazy. But when he said he went for 2 simply because he couldn’t go for 3 it absolutely enraged Michigan at the time and the harshness of this rivalry forever continued. Bo Schembechler would become a legend because of his ability to have his team always ready for Woody and the trash talk that went on, and continues to do so between the 2 schools is legendary. Just the fact that Woody used to refer to Michigan as “The School to the North” (he would never call them Michigan) it shows the kind of hate this rivalry can and still does bring out in everyone. I respect OSU but that’s all I’ll give them. In fact, forget calling them OSU any longer. They truly are “The School to the South”. Indeed, the Buckeyes are the one team in all of sports that I would TRULY consider using the word HATE for.

Well, there you have it - The sports teams that I hate the most. Was there any doubt about what team was going to be #1 on this list? Definitely NOT! Until next time, cheer on your teams and don’t be afraid to hate on the ones you don’t like. After all, there’s always someone out there hating on your favorite team as we speak.
