THE TOP 10 BEST HELMETS IN THE NCAA/NFL

Posted by | March 1, 2009 .

THE BIG D has less time on his hands to write articles these days. This site has been kept up for me in case I do find more time to write, such as today. I will be back on a full time basis eventually. I’m a frequent sports web surfer when I have the time and lately I have noticed a growing trend on blogs. Everyone seems to be ranking the best helmets in college football, the NFL or both. I figured, why not combine both leagues and give you my top 10 best and worst helmets in the NFL and NCAA combined. That’s using your head, BIG D! Here we go…

1. MICHIGAN WOLVERINES

Fritz Crisler designed this legendary helmet in 1935 for Princeton University and brought it to Michigan in 1938. The Wolverines have used it ever since. Little did he know that he had designed the best helmet alive. Anyone who doesn’t agree is just jealous. The 3-wing look is legendary and that combined with the Maize and Blue colors puts this helmet over the top. Michigan even uses the helmet to help them sell recruits. That is unbelievable but it’s a testament to the University for sticking to what I believe is the best helmet, symbol and image ever created. There are those out there who often say, “It has nothing to do with the Wolverine nickname.” That doesn’t matter. There is a legendary mystique that surrounds this lid. One look at it makes you think about Michigan tradition, Michigan Stadium in October and about college football in general and is the best looking football helmet I have ever seen. It’s an obvious choice if you ask me.

2. CINCINNATI BENGALS

To this day my father believes he designed this one. As the story goes, he and his cousin used to have Lions’ season tickets at the Pontiac Silverdome and obviously, they went to a Bengals/Lions game (a pre-season contest). Dad claims that a gentleman with a briefcase loaded with papers, stats, etc. was sitting next to him and asked my father what he thought of the then Bengal’s helmets (patterned after the Cleveland Browns helmets) and how he would change them if he had the choice to do so. My father claims that his answer then was everything that you see now. Coincidence? Maybe. A story of complete BS? Likely, but either way it still makes me wonder. I’ll never know. Anything black and orange looks deadly but because of the design of the Bengal stripes this one is really impressive. Thanks Dad!!!

3. FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES

I can’t stand any Florida team PERIOD but there is only one thing I can say about why this helmet makes my #3 spot. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE TOMAHAWK, BABY!

4. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS

Whether it’s the white look or the dark blue one the lightning bolt coming across the helmet is a great design. I’m not really a fan of the uniform itself but I sure like the lid.

5. FLORIDA GATORS

The Gators are easily one of my most hated teams in college football but you sure can’t hate their helmet and uniform due to the great colors and how it stands out so well.

6. OAKLAND RAIDERS

This helmet (and uniform) is probably the most intimidating in football regardless of league. The black and silver pirate makes for one great image, symbol and helmet. It’s just too bad this team is run by Al Davis because the helmet is just about the only thing I’ll give credit to the useless Raiders for.

7. DALLAS COWBOYS

It’s a very simple design with just a star and usually I don’t like helmets that simple but that being said, it’s a great color scheme and it looks classy. I like the fact that just because they are the Cowboys, they didn’t go out and try and whip up some cheesy cartoon cowboy creation. This helmet is great because it has JUST a star. I don’t usually like the simple designs but I’ll make an exception for this helmet.

8. NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH

This is probably the only helmet of this style that I would put on this list. One color helmets with no symbols or images do nothing for me usually. There is just something about this greenish gold dome that is very authentic and much like Michigan’s helmet, this one makes you think of past tradition of Notre Dame. I debated this but if you look at this helmet it really does make you think twice about how good it looks.

9. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

The eagle wings on this helmet absolutely soar.

10. PITTSBURGH STEELERS

I think people overrate this helmet a little bit but it’s still worthy of my top 10 simply because it is a very unique symbol and despite the fact that it has a very normal color scheme for a helmet, black still brings out certain symbols if done right and this one certainly was well done.

Yes indeed, Michigan’s helmet leads the way. Look on the bright side, 3 wins last year or not, THEY STILL LOOKED GOOD! That has to stand for something.
