THE ANSWER TO OUR PROBLEMS

Posted by bigD | November 7, 2008 .

It was a move that I couldn’t believe at first. It still hasn’t really sunk in yet. The Detroit Pistons recently acquired who I consider to be the greatest little man of all time. That’s really saying something considering the great Isiah Thomas once played for the Pistons but let’s face it, Allen Iverson is THE ANSWER, literally. Joe Dumars promised at the end of last season that changes would be made. I believed him. As far as I am concerned – IN JOE WE TRUST. He knows how to win and his decisions are often good ones (despite the Darko draft choice which we won’t talk about). This really was a great move for our Pistons. In obtaining Allen Iverson, the Pistons now have a player who has averaged just under 28 points a game in his career and a true blue superstar who really does it all offensively. Obviously he has had some problems with attitude in the past but I know Dumars doesn’t mind that part of this risk. Joe D played with the Bad Boys. He knows all about bad attitudes and hard ass players. I don’t think Iverson will be like that this time around though. The little guy is just so OBSESSED with winning an NBA Championship that I really think he will do whatever it takes. If that means being dedicated, showing up for practice (THAT IS THE BIG ONE) and being obedient for Head Coach, Michael Curry then so be it. Iverson has already stated that he will do “WHATEVER IT TAKES” including doing whatever is asked of him by Curry. That is refreshing to say the least. That statement wouldn’t have been made by Iverson 10 years ago. This isn’t the past though. It’s the future. And in Iverson the Pistons have a player that might just take them to the next level and win it all yet again.

The trade itself should help both teams right away. Denver wanted a true blue point guard and in Billups they certainly acquired that. Antonio McDyess was also part of the deal and despite him saying he won’t play for anyone but Detroit he obviously has no choice. In knowing that though, the Pistons might even end up with McDyess right back. Denver gains more defense in Billups but less offense then what Iverson can give. That being said, the Pistons will get over 10 more points a game with Iverson, a different chemistry, swagger and even a mystique. For that reason, I absolutely love this deal.

It’s tough to say goodbye to Billups but obviously to get a player of Iverson’s calibre it simply had to be done. Dumars was upset. Six straight trips to the Eastern Conference Finals but nowhere near enough trips to the big dance was the reason. None of the Pistons wanted to be split up. Let’s face it, it was a good group of players. That being said, sports isn’t always about playing with friends as much as it’s about winning. With Iverson now, I believe that’s exactly what the Pistons will do. Is it enough to top the great Boston Celtics or the LeBron James driven Cleveland Cavs? I guess time will tell. Is it truly an end of an era in Detroit? When you think about their “GOING TO WORK” mentality of the past it truly might be the end of an era. Part of that phrase dealt with the fact that the Pistons won a title a few years ago without a top notch scorer but instead, they did it the old fashion way with aggressive defence out of their starters. Now, enter the one player they haven’t had since Grant Hill. Iverson is a dynamite scorer capable of 30 points on any given night and he’s got an attitude to go with it.

I am a fan of Allen Iverson, attitude or not. I always have been and always will be. Not enough can be said nowadays about a player who constantly plays aggressively, wants to win worse then anyone alive and physically gives it his all every night. So he’s missed practice. So he’s been a thorn in the side of coaches in the past. So he’s been a selfish player before. Who hasn’t? The guy wanted to be a Piston. He made that public and they wanted him. Well, THEY’VE GOT HIM. And the one thing that Detroit needed the most to get them over the hump is the one thing that no one in the East wanted to see them get. A big point getter and all star leader with more heart then most. I have a question for you? What happens when greatness comes to an already great team, puts them over the top and makes Joe Dumars look like a genius? THE ANSWER! And no, this answer doesn’t come in the form of a question. It’s AI – Allen Iverson. Welcome to Detroit! Be afraid EASTERN CONFERENCE. BE VERY AFRAID!!!
