STALLIONS D-CLAW THE HUSKIES!

Posted by bigD | September 4, 2009 .

In facing one of the best passing attacks alive Thursday Night, the biggest question for the Northern Huskies coming into their game vs. The Sterling Heights Stallions was… Could the patented Husky Defense (won the game vs. St. Clair the week before allowing just 83 total yards) stop Sterling Heights for long enough to keep them in the game in hopes that the struggling Husky offense could score enough to counter it? A tough task indeed but was it possible? For one half of football, I actually thought it might be. The Huskies got on the board very quickly and looked decent offensively to start the game. Their first play from scrimmage ended in a 55 yard touchdown run from Nate Manis on a counter play. Alas, the first touchdown became their only touchdown. Sterling Heights answered on a 7 yard TD run by Corey Robertson but still didn’t look as sharp offensively as they were perhaps used to. This was where the Huskies had to capitalize and besides a 26 yard field goal from Carson Nowakowski, they never really did. It was 10-7 at halftime and this couldn’t have been scripted any better for Husky Head Coach, Casey Kuscera who had to be very proud of his Husky defense again. The Huskies were controlling the game with their option/ball control offense and most importantly they were keeping this great Sterling Heights passing offense off the field. On top of that, they were winning the battle up front on both sides of the football but would it continue? The answer is…NO.

The Stallions woke up in the second half. It was a different team on both sides of the football and it certainly showed on the scoreboard with 23 unanswered points to take the game. Just about the only positive the Huskies could take from this game besides another strong defensive showing for the most part was that they only trailed by 1 possession in the 4th quarter. Northern was still very much in the game at this point. However after two more touchdowns, the fat lady was starting to sing. It’s not a big secret. The Huskies are going through tough times. After going 1-8 two years ago and 4-5 last season, it can be difficult to stay positive at times. For the most part the kids stay up and have great attitudes and I certainly credit them for that. Week after week they continue to come out and play hard no matter what and continue to hold their heads up high. Husky bashers, think about this. A week ago they gained only 141 total yards. This week against a much better team they gained 183. Although they threw 3 interceptions in the process the total yards were still an improvement.

The bottom line is that Sterling Heights has a tremendous high school passing offense. Beating them is certainly easier said then done. Northern did it for as long as they could and in a sense, held a team who had 388 passing yards a week ago to just 204 this week. That’s something to hold your head high about despite the loss. Special credit has to go out to the talented Stallion QB – Kyle Vieth, RB – Corey Robertson and the very talented swing-back – Jason Vissotoski who was the most impressive player on the field. For the Huskies, Mark Perez was his usual hard playing self (particularly on defense). DL – Teddy Dooley played like a wild man and LB – Mark Woolford looked very strong. LB – Austin Pickering also played hard (Don’t tell him he’s playing in a cast). The problem with the Huskies continues to be their inconsistencies on offense. That being said, the “O” looked much better this week then last week and hopefully they can continue to step it up that much more. With the Port Huron High Big Reds coming to Memorial Stadium for the annual rivalry game next week, they better.
