SELIG ATTENDING 755!

Posted by bigD | July 29, 2007 .

selig.jpgBud Selig is not one of my favorite personalities (or in his case…non-personalities) in the sports world. That being said, I think he did the right thing by deciding to be in the stands when Barry Bonds’ ties and eventually breaks the HR record. Whether Bonds is guilty of steroid use or not, Selig definitely has a point. Bonds is innocent and until he’s proven guilty you must treat him like he’s innocent the way any other ballplayer would be treated. For me though, it comes down to one simple thing… Steroids or not…this is truly a remarkable record and achievement and no matter what the drug, what the situation or what the future holds regarding both the record and the hall, the present is now and much respect should be given to Bonds as a ballplayer (although as a human being he makes me puke) and to this record which people at one time said would never be broken. I can’t say I totally blame Hank Aaron for saying he will not be there when the record is broken. Why would he? Was he accused of steroid use throughout his magical HR days? Of course not so it’s pretty obvious why he would feel like a cheater has cheated his way into the record books and took the record in a much easier fashion then Aaron himself did. Bonds stated that he could care less if either Selig or Aaron are in attendance when he breaks the record and Selig certainly isn’t sincere even if he is in fact showing up for it. If you don’t have the sincerity and the desire to make the event what I believe it should be…AN EVENT (not just a game) then why even show up if your Bud Selig anyway? To show that the record and the league have some dignity? No Bud, there can’t be any dignity in a league so accused of steroid use surrounding the biggest record perhaps in sports history. As a commissioner, I don’t give a dam if you attend the game Bonds accomplishes thisbonds1.jpg feat in or not. As a fan of the game though, you owe it to the game you work for to be there and to cheer this feat on and even (dare I say it) to care about it because it may not happen ever again. Maybe Bonds cheated and maybe he didn’t. But we as fans won’t be cheated when 755 reaches the seats. And 756??? Steroids or not… that’s what legends are made of!
