RETURN OF THE MATT

Posted by | December 12, 2010.

It’s one thing to make a comeback. It’s another thing to come back from what Port Huron Northern Husky – Matt Davis came back from. After suffering a season ending (and in the case of football, CAREER ENDING) injury before the 2010 football season even began, some wondered if Matt (starting football QB for the Huskies) would play any future sports at all, PERIOD. Friday night (Dec. 11th) was the first game of 2010 for the Huskies and if it was any indication, Matt Davis is no longer back…BUT HE’S BACK WITH A VENGEANCE! Davis set a Husky record for 3 point field goals last season and on this night it wasn’t hard to see why. Davis made four 3-pointers in the first half, including three during a three minute span to lead the Huskies to a 63-51 victory over the Anchor Bay Tars. Davis finished the game with 20 points. Davis was not only the game’s high scorer but he showed people that although it’s not easily overcome, you can battle back from injuries if you work hard enough and have the heart and courage to do so. Here’s how this one went… …CONTINUE READING =>

FIGHT COMES TOO LATE…HUSKY SEASON ENDS

Posted by | November 3, 2010.

I’ve been late writing about the final game of the Port Huron Northern Huskies 2010 varsity football season. The reason for that is because I have to admit that I was disappointed in the way that Northern played last Friday Night. It’s one thing to lose. It’s another to beat yourself with penalties and mistakes the way that Northern did throughout the game. This Northern team played 9 weeks of determined, tough, physical football but on this night they just seemed flat. I really can’t explain it. The thing is, to play so poorly and rebound late to the point of still almost pulling off the victory does speak volumes to the effort of these kids. In other words, if I sit here and think about Friday Night’s 14-7 loss to the Lakeview Huskies I get frustrated but if I instead think of all that the Huskies accomplished this year in what was clearly a turnaround season, I have to admit that made Husky 2010 football worth it for me and it does give people something to look forward to for not only next year but in the near future. There’s no doubt that… …CONTINUE READING =>

ODE TO THE BIG RED SENIORS!

Posted by | October 24, 2010.

Normally when a MAC GOLD team comes marching into Memorial Stadium, you automatically think, our MAC BLUE (a higher rated division then the GOLD) PORT HURON HIGH BIG REDS should beat them bad. Then again, the Madison Heights Madison Eagles are not your everyday MAC GOLD football team. For starters, they came into Friday Night’s contest having been victorious in their last 18 of 20 contests (they entered this game with a 7-1 record), going back to last season. I don’t care if they only face MAC GOLD competition. At any level that’s impressive. The Eagles also had a weapon that we don’t see that often – A future NCAA Division I football player. The Eagles featured RB – Valdez Showers. He was obviously highly touted coming into this one, having been recruited by the likes of Northwestern, Auburn, Florida, Michigan State and even Michigan. In the end, he chose Florida and for one night, I could actually say that we were watching a future Florida Gator. Did it really matter though? It was Senior Night at Memorial Stadium and the Big Red seniors WOULD NOT be outdone for anything or anyone. Port Huron took the game – 41-13 very impressively. It was basically the story of two different halves. The first half was for the most part, an evenly played game. It was a 20-13 halftime score in favor of the Big Reds but at that point they didn’t look… …CONTINUE READING =>

NORTHERN SENIORS PROVE THEY’RE HUSKY!

Posted by | October 17, 2010.

In the world of football, they say a good defense always beats a good offense. On Friday Night at Port Huron’s Memorial Stadium the Port Huron Northern Huskies proved that saying to indeed be true! It was the battle of Port Huron. It was the Superbowl of Port Huron. It was the 14th time that I (THE BIG D) called play-by-play (CPHS – Channel 6 in Port Huron) for THE RIVALRY GAME between the Port Huron High Big Reds and the aforementioned Port Huron Northern Huskies! This particular rivalry game had a lot at stake this time. PH came into the game with a 4-3 record but with just 1 loss in the MAC BLUE. A victory would not only keep the Big Reds chances for a playoff berth alive (6 wins in 9 games is an automatic playoff berth in the MHSAA) but also their chances to still win the MAC BLUE. PHN walked into this one with a 5-2 overall record but they had 2 losses in the MAC BLUE. The biggest single key for Northern was making the playoffs as they had a chance to do so with a win. There was also a small possibility that… …CONTINUE READING =>
