THE PLAY OF ALL PLAYS!
Every now and then we witness a moment in sports that seems to stand out among the rest. It seems to capture us, amaze us and even in many ways temporarily stop time. Friday night at Port Huron’s Memorial Stadium we saw a special moment. It was that one special play that makes it possible for us to one day look back and say WE WERE THERE! I’m happy to say I called play-by-play for it. BIG RED QB – MARK CHAPMAN DID IT! He won the District Title for Port Huron with one big run! In doing so, #5 put an all time stamp on the greatest season in Port Huron football history, not only assuring yet another playoff game for the Big Reds this Friday Night but also assuring his place among the all time GREAT PORT HURON HIGH BIG REDS! One play sealed the 2011 fate of the Rochester Adams Highlanders. One play won the 2011 District Championship for Port Huron. One play said …CONTINUE READING =>
A HAPPY BIG RED HALLOWEEN!
And so we come to Halloween, 2011! How scary for the Ortonville-Brandon Blackhawks as Friday Night at Memorial Stadium the Big Reds proved it really was a “THRILLER NIGHT”! The Blackhawks gave PH a bit of a “SPOOKY AFFAIR” but in the end, the Big Reds chop-chopped the Blackhawks 32-14. In a season that has had so many great moments and firsts for PH, we have yet another one! This was the first ever playoff victory in Port Huron High’s school history! In thinking of all the great teams that PH has had in the past, it’s a tough stat to believe but in knowing this 2011 version of the Big Reds is the team that has indeed made playoff history for the school, this victory might just have been the biggest single PH win of all time! The victory improved the Big Reds to an unbelievable 9-1 (they should be 10-0 if not for the Madison Heights Madison collapse two weeks ago). This has been the BIG D’s… …CONTINUE READING =>
LET THE PLAYOFFS BEGIN!!!
It was a tough night to be a Port Huron High Big Red last Friday Night in Madison Heights Madison as the Big Reds apparently fell 28-27. I didn’t call play-by-play for the game itself but in reading about the outcome, without a doubt it must have been a tough one to take. The Big Reds gave up 16 straight points in the 4th quarter. The whole point is that PH needs to remember this game as their 2011 wake up call. A perfect 9-0 record would have been nice but it’s not the end of the world. There is only one thing that matters now – Winning one game at a time. I know it’s cliché…and to say it’s cliché is even cliché but it’s the truth. There is no tomorrow. It’s sudden death! Win and move on. Lose and go home. WHAT WILL BE THE BIG RED’S FATE??????????
Injured QB – Mark Chapman is going to be back but it’s clear that he won’t be at 100% health so this week’s Friday Night Playoff game vs. the 5-4 Ortonville-Brandon Blackhawks will come down yet again to RB – Winslow Chapman. Since the Big Reds are primarily a run first team, and since Mark probably won’t be ripping many for 50 (like he used to before going down with injury), it will be up to Winslow to carry the load. Perhaps Mark will pass more often knowing he might not be able to gain as many rushing yards as in past weeks. Either way this game is the Big Reds game to win and in my opinion, they will. Teams that go 8-1 and upset mighty Utica Eisenhower don’t do it by mistake. There is a reason why this team went 8-1 and should have been perfect. It’s doesn’t happen by accident. This game will be no accident.
The Big D’s prediction – PORT HURON – 28 / Ortonville-Brand 20 – I think this game will be closer then the records indicate due to Ortonville-Brand QB – Shane Mahaffy and this highly touted Blackhawk spread offense. They rely on spreading the whole field, short yards and yardage after the catch. The true speed of the Big Red secondary will indeed be challenged. Obviously with such a talented offense, Ortonville struggles defensively and Big Reds will be too strong on both sides of the ball for the Blackhawks to pull the upset. Also keep an eye on Mark Chapman and his injury status as the game goes on. A healthy Chapman would spell certain doom for Ortonville but with him slightly injured, this is an obvious big key in this one.
Good luck to Port Huron this week. The Big D will be in the booth and as I always say… LET’S GET NASTY PORT HURON!!!
8 and 0! WELCOME TO THE WINSLOW SHOW!
I’m about to state the obvious – The 2011 Port Huron High Big Reds are special. With an amazing 8-0 record, it’s clear…This is not your everyday football team. They play the game of football the way it’s supposed to be played. The Big Reds are big, fast, strong and they’re the best blocking football team I’ve ever called play by play for at the varsity level. Knowing all of that, it’s not a shock that the Big Reds won Friday night’s annual Super Bowl of Port Huron vs. The Port Huron Northern Huskies – 42-16. The victory not only gave the Big Reds the MAC BLUE DIVISION TITLE outright but they also took home THE BRICK FOWLER TROPHY (given to the winner of the Port Huron rivalry every year). Not only that but they had to do it knowing that their star QB – Mark Chapman went down with a high ankle sprain in the second half. To most teams, that would probably be an undoing, but not to these Big Reds. Why? … …CONTINUE READING =>
