MUSICAL POSITIONS!

Posted by bigD | September 28, 2008 .

Tiger skipper, Jim Leyland announced on Saturday that next season they will move Brandon Inge back to 3B and put Carlos Guillen in LF. Even in a 100% perfect world, the Tigers have no real answer defensively as what once looked bright is now a real mess. Although he’s played there before, let’s face it, Guillen hasn’t seen significant time in LF. What will this do for his attitude? His offensive stats are already going down. Will this move bring them down more being as he has to adapt to a new position in both attitude and ability? Will his glove be good enough out there? Will he even stay healthy? Obviously, Leyland will move him around a bit especially if they don’t re-sign Renteria at SS (which is very likely). The move puts Inge back where he absolutely dominates – 3B and that’s fine and dandy but when you barely hit .200 I don’t care how good you are with the glove, your future screams for left-bench.

As for catcher, Tigers might offer Pudge another contract as long as it’s significantly less and Boston’s Jason Varitek (the only other decent free agent catcher out there) is likely to re-sign there. Instead, I think the Tigers will go another route next season and play the 1-2 punch of Dane Sardina and Dusty Ryan at catcher. Ryan is young but has demonstrated some pop in his bat so you never know. Sardina has basically the bat of Inge but the glove behind the plate that Inge had no prayer of having. Either way, Detroit doesn’t have many quality options since many of their star players are already spoken for with big contracts. Tigers will shop Magglio Ordonez around in the off-season being as next season will be the final year on his contract and despite the fact that Detroit fans will hate it, it’s a move that MUST BE DONE. Indeed, one of the most respected and successful GM’s of our time – Dave Dombrowski has his hands full in Detroit. His moves have been questionable thus far (trading away a lot of young talented arms) and as long as the Tigers keep switching around their defensive players, the struggling should continue. It’s ok though Detroit. It could be worse. We could still have Randy Smith. PUKE!
