MLB PREVIEW - CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Posted by bigD | April 25, 2007 .

After a lot of studying, thinking and dare I say it, watching baseball, I finally have all teams summarized and am now ready to take this baseball preview to the next level - THE PLAYOFFS. With that in mind, here are my MLB playoff predictions.

NATIONAL LEAGUE PREDICTIONS

NL WEST – LA DODGERS
NL CENTRAL – STL CARDINALS
NL EAST – NEW YORK METS
WILD CARD – PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

NLCS - NEW YORK METS vs. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

Don’t let the slow start by the Phillies fool you. They are a very strong team and will eventually prove it once their injuries subside and everything gets back to normal in Philadelphia. As a result, I am still sticking with them to edge Atlanta for the wild card. After all, still keep in mind that this season is 162 games long not 50. To me, the Mets are still the best overall team in the National League. If Pedro comes back healthy and starts throwing blanks by late summer they will be a lock to win the East and probably, the best record in the National League. Especially if St. Louis doesn’t get going.

The overall ability of Reyes, Delgado and Beltran will shine in the Mets/Phillies NLCS and they’ll take it to a Philly team that will just edge out Atlanta for the wild card. The fact that the Mets barely lost to STL in last season’s pennant I think has sparked this Mets team to a point of believing in themselves and getting to the next level this time around because they’ll finally perform at the consistent level they should have last season. Thus, the Mets will win the National League and go to the World Series whether it be the Phillies, Dodgers, Cardinals or even the Atlanta Braves (don’t count them out with the start they’ve had either) standing in their way.

BIG D’S PREDICTION - METS OVER PHILLIES – 4 GAMES TO 2

AMERICAN LEAGUE PREDICTIONS

AL WEST – Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
AL CENTRAL – Detroit Tigers
AL EAST – Boston Red Sox
AL WILDCARD – Minnesota Twins

ALCS - DETROIT TIGERS vs. BOSTON RED SOX

In reality, any of the magic four can come out of the Central and the Red Sox might not beat out the Yankees but top to bottom I’ve changed my mind about the East and I think the Red Sox will stand above the Yankees this time around. Due to the central being so strong, the wild card team should come from there but the AL is very strong period this season so it’s very difficult to predict. Our hometown Tigers stand as good of a chance as any though, especially if Kenny Rogers comes back by mid-summer and starts doing what he did last season.

This Tigers/Sox series would be a classic and would feature a bit of everything. Bondo vs. Dice K. Schilling vs. Verlander. Beckett vs. Rogers. Sound good? The key to the whole series would be Detroit’s pitching holding off the big bats of Boston in Ramirez and Ortiz and I think they can for the most part. The pitching would be even and might even come down to the bullpens. It would be a hard fought series and the better overall team would scrap it out in a great 7 game series and that team ladies and gentlemen…WILL BE DETROIT
