I can’t believe what I saw on Saturday afternoon. Usually when I say things like that as it relates to Michigan football, it’s not a good thing. That being said, Saturday was indeed a good thing. NO. IT WAS A GREAT THING! Trailing 19-0 at halftime in a game where Michigan generated just over 25 total yards of offense I, like most Michigan fans wrote them off. Why wouldn’t I? After all, this is a team that looked absolutely terrible on offense in previous weeks with their “fumbling ways” and they did their best to keep the fumbles and turnovers going. Knowing that, usually when it rains on a team like that, it pours. That being said, something happened on Saturday at Michigan’s Big House that I can’t really explain. All of a sudden in the 3rd quarter, Wisconsin’s defense was drained. They got tired. It was noticeable and Michigan capitalized on it. The crowd was going crazy. The Michigan players were nuts and even Head Coach Rich Rodriguez was jumping up and down. Michigan scored 27 straight points, leading them to rally late and beat a Wisconsin team that was absolutely stunned, 27-25. Despite all of their errors and stupid ways, I have to say it…MICHIGAN DESERVED THE WIN! Something can certainly be said for teams that don’t give up. I think Wisconsin clearly felt like they had it in the bag at the half. WRONG! It was a different Michigan team in the 2nd half and they earned the victory in pulling the upset over the 9th ranked Badgers. Why couldn’t they have played like this against the dam Fighting Irish? The world will never know.
I thought this game was Stephen Threet’s coming out party. I also think Coach Rich Rodriguez finally discovered how best to use Threet. It’s pretty obvious that Threet just isn’t an option spread, running QB (although he did gain some big yards in the open field). Instead, Threet seemed more comfortable in the 2nd half without running back misdirections and/or counters. Threet finally looked like a strong pass in the pocket QB and was mainly effective when Michigan went with 3, 4 and 5 WR sets. I really think we’re going to see more wide open offense with Threet in weeks to come now. When it was all or nothing, Threet played his best football. Now it’s up to RichRod to utilize this going into next week. I have no doubts that he will and so will the Wolverines.
As I’ve stated in the past, so often we look at Michigan football and we get greedy. We expect to see victories. When we don’t get them, as fans, we are upset and downright shocked. Well, this is a learning curve for a bunch of kids that learned VERY QUICKLY on Saturday afternoon how to use the spread offense to their advantage. Let’s not overlook the defense here either. I think Wisconsin had a terrible offensive game plan and they paid for it but Michigan’s D really stepped up and were the driving force in this victory. Wisconsin is loaded up front with 6 foot 5, 320 pound linemen and they think they can just push forward all day and let PJ Hill wreck teams with hard nosed yardage. Well, that’s fine and dandy but when they needed it the most they couldn’t beat Michigan that way. If this game was played 9 more times, Wisconsin probably wins 8 of the 9 times, but on one special day in Ann Arbor the Michigan boys became Michigan men. Wake up Wolverines…there’s more talent here then we think! Hail to the victors! I’ve never been prouder to be a Michigan fan in my life. “It’s great, to be, a MICHIGAN WOLVERINE!” I hope it was a good flight back Badgers. Was it sloppy? Was it clean? WHO CARES? YOU JUST PLAIN GOT BEAT!
