LYNDSEY CURES THE HUSKIES!

Posted by | January 31, 2010 .

Up until Friday Night I had never called play-by-play for Girl’s Varsity Basketball in Port Huron before. Well there’s a first for everything and on a night where Northern had a fundraising event for cancer survivors (HOOPS FOR A CURE NIGHT AT PORT HURON NORTHERN HIGH SCHOOL) the girl’s of both Port Huron High Schools certainly played their hearts out. It was however, the Port Huron Northern Husky girls who had the last laugh, walking away with a 55-46 victory over their crosstown rivals – The Big Reds. Samantha Lyndsey (perhaps the quietest 18 points and 11 rebound game I’ve ever seen) was the difference in this one. At one point she had 6 straight 1st quarter points in leading the Huskies to a 10-0 run, breaking open a 15-15 tie. From there, the Huskies didn’t look back. Despite the continued efforts of the Big Reds who refused to let any Husky lead stand, there was just too much continued Husky defense and it was the big reason that Northern held on. I counted at least 3 times where it seemed like Northern was pulling away and back came the Big Reds. The problem is, right when you thought Port Huron was on the verge of taking the game over… BOOM… …the Huskies started adding to the lead again and eventually, the Big Red luck ended. I partially do credit Port Huron for continually hanging around for as long as they could though.

It was only 26-20 for the Huskies at halftime. Despite being down by 6, the Big Reds had to feel good about themselves that they were still even in this game. On paper, with the Huskies being a MAC WHITE team, and the Big Reds being only MAC GOLD, you’d think this rivalry would be one sided from the get go but it ended up being a pretty decent game. The Huskies ended up pulling away in the 4th quarter, leading by as much as 15 at one point. As mentioned, Big Reds had a lot of fight and still got within 7. That was as close as they got though. Perhaps Big Red, Adriana Jordan (11 points) had the most unlucky game of her Big Red career. The game started with her taking a forearm to the face, having to play much of the first half with a nose plug. She then got a ball off that same nose later on in the same first half. The second half was kinder to her face but not so kind to her as far as luck went. It seemed like Jordan had about 5 layups that should have gone in but for some reason just plain didn’t. There were times when Jordan couldn’t even buy a basket and it wasn’t her fault. These were shots that normally would go down but for some reason didn’t. I remember saying that I haven’t seen bad luck like that before. Jordan was all over the court and showed great hustle defensively throughout. Again though, it just wasn’t enough.

Husky, Kelly Kramer also had an excellent game, particularly from the free throw line where she won the game late. Kramer had 13 points and assured the victory for the Huskies. Kramer played the entire game with a bit of a tough edge and she got rewarded for it with many trips to the line, where she was successful. PHN improved their record to 7-6, meanwhile PH fell to 5-8. For the most part it was an exciting game. The Big Red girls just didn’t have any luck and when you combine that with hard nosed Husky play, it was more then enough for the Huskies to do their part in winning this big rivalry game on a big rivalry night. And considering these Husky girls were sporting all pink jerseys with the names of cancer survivors on the backs of them, indeed it was a special night for them and a special victory that they all (particularly the seniors) will never forget.
