HAVE FAITH, MICHIGAN!

Posted by bigD | September 20, 2008 .

I heard a comment this week about Michigan football that I never thought I’d hear in my lifetime. Without saying who said it, the comment was, “In all the years I’ve cheered for Michigan I’ve never ever seen them this bad.” At first I thought nothing of it but the more I got to thinking about it the more I had to agree and the more it made me sort of depressed. Despite the fact that this team wasn’t expected to do anything this season and they are certainly doing their part to live up to the “NO HYPE” thus far, it still kind of makes me shocked and saddened. After all this is Michigan. This is the mighty Maize and Blue. This is the 1997 National Championship School. Sadly, they aren’t even close to that level anymore, at least…not yet. That’s exactly how we have to look at it…NOT YET.

Last Saturday against Notre Dame, U of M did everything they could to simply hand the game to Notre Dame on a silver platter and say, “Here you go.” Is the spirit of the Fab Five still haunting us? Was this another “Vegas pay off” game? No, I am just kidding but it sure looked that way. Come on guys! Dropping simple kick-offs? I had a Notre Dame fan rub it in to me but how stupid can you be to do so? It’s not a Fighting Irish victory where they can honestly look back and say, “Wow, did we ever earn that one. What a great, well earned victory vs. Michigan.” Nice try Irish fans. Maybe if your team wasn’t gift wrapped 3 easy touchdowns not even so close to Christmas time you would realize how much your team sucks, which they clearly do, and how much Michigan gave you the game you claim to have dominated. Instead I am sitting here today stating the obvious – My Wolverines suck. That being said, I sit here with a ton of hope despite the fact that this team can’t even return a simple punt or kickoff without the dropsies. The hope I speak of comes in the name - Sam McGuffie. In a season where a QB (Stephen Threet) throws short passes you have to dive for, a spread offense run without the correct personnel in it, and where Michigan is getting embarrassed all over the place, at least the one bright spot we can give credit to is the young, talented RB - McGuffe who is only going to get better.

I admire Coach Rich Rodriguez’ patience at this point but I don’t think even he expected this. Just like Michigan, Rodriguez is a winner. He expects to win every game he plays. Well clearly Rich, this is not the team to do that. That’s ok though, since they weren’t expected to anyway. But what about next year and the year after? How long will Michigan stand for this? My guess is one season and I actually have a lot of faith in Rich Rod but we all need to have patience. As difficult as that is, hats off to Rodriguez who does seem to have the patience that is needed for these kids to learn. Again, Michigan clearly doesn’t have the proper personnel to run the spread offense yet. That falls on one man – Rich Rod and it depends on his ability to recruit the future. This team can’t accurately be judged yet and either can he. When can you judge him then? In my opinion, he should get 4 years from his first recruiting class. I personally don’t think it will take that long though. Rodriguez knows the kind of players he needs and I have every bit of faith in the world that he will indeed go out and get them. Why? Michigan can recruit easier then West Virginia, anywhere they want to and with the best of them. Rich Rod is going to try to recruit pure speed. Good because we certainly need it.

All I can say Michigan fans, is have faith. The time will come. But can we have faith? Do we have the patience to last out this season as spoiled as we’ve been in the past? I guess time will tell. Time! Something Coach Rodriguez needs and as punishing as it may be for all the fans of Michigan, it’s something we need as well.
