CROSS YOUR FINGERS, PORT HURON!

Posted by bigD | October 25, 2008 .

Obviously I didn’t call play-by-play for this week’s Port Huron High Big Reds game (they were in Warren Woods Tower) but judging by the turnout I certainly wish I would have. Whether or not the Big Reds would make the playoffs was no longer in question. They assured themselves a playoff berth with last week’s victory. Perhaps this week was the most important game of their entire season though being as a victory this week would all but assure them a home playoff game for the 2nd season in a row. Knowing what was at stake, the Big Reds made a home playoff game next week possible with a huge 28-20 victory over Warren Woods Tower. Due to the fact that everyone knows it’s a different Big Red team at home, as long as it’s in Memorial Stadium next week, anything is possible. That’s why this game really did mean so much to Port Huron and all of their fans.

Knowing the kind of game that Big Red RB – Chris Tatti had, I’m really pissed off that I didn’t get to see this game now. Despite the horrible weather conditions, the great Tatti had 37 carries but the next stat is the one that actually blows the BIG D away (and that is not easily done). Tatti had an unprecedented 329 rushing yards, 4 touchdowns and he even kicked 4 extra points. If this is not the kind of football player who should be voted the best player in the MAC for 2008 then I don’t know who is. Tatti even had an 85 yard TD for the Big Reds and proved his legacy once and for all for Port Huron High. You don’t think he was serious about getting a home playoff game for week 10? He is nothing short of unreal. The Big Reds had 406 total rushing yards and how can Head Coach Ryan Mullins not be proud of this one? According to Mullins, “It was a wet field, rained pretty much the whole night. But even in the conditions, Chris ran hard and took care of the ball. We just wait and see (where we end up in the playoffs). It’s too much to try and predict. Wait and hope and maybe we’ll get a home game.” Usually 7-2 is enough to get that home game that Coach Mullins speaks of. Cross your fingers, toes and everything else you can cross, Big Red fans. I think a home game is indeed in our Week 10 future.

Although just 1 for 6 for 22 yards passing in this game, Jordan Galanos was 8 for 55 on the ground as well. Galanos had a great senior year at QB and came in this season as basically a player who they weren’t even expecting to be at QB in the first place. A converted SS on the baseball field and a cornerback on the football field, Galanos has shown everyone that sometimes being a great athlete can make you very versatile in many areas, sports and positions. JG has been a great leader and will certainly be a senior that will be remembered for a long, long time. Steve Sawyer had just 1 catch on the night for 20 yards but again it was very wet and rainy. Sawyer has looked good for much of this season. He runs crisp routes, has great hands and should be a great counter to WR – Durrand Ashford in the playoff game if he even plays. What Ashford is capable of is truly scary but since breaking his thumb early in the year he hasn’t been back. Will he play now when it matters the most? I personally think he is good enough to make the biggest difference in the game but will he play? We’ll see.

Whether or not Ashford does play or not or whether or not the Big Reds even have a home playoff game next week at the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium I just want to personally congratulate this great Port Huron team as it’s really been a pleasure to call play-by-play for them all season long. From the BIG D to the BIG REDS, remember, being big is a state of mind and I hope you all play big next week. BRING IT HOME FOR PORT HURON. The whole city is behind you boys. Indeed…LET’S GET NASTY!

Tim - I kinda figured Trevor wouldnt be hurt and if so he wouldnt be hurt for long. He always seems to be hurt in some way playing through some pain. As I said on the one broadcast Baker is a TG - TOUGH GUY!
As for Warren DeLaSalle please dont go into this game thinking these guys are ranked in state. Go down there and kick their ass.

Durrand - I think its a shame that you got hurt in the first place. The compliments and respect were earned. Like I said before this would have clearly been a different team had you played all season long. Dont be intimidated by this DeLaSalle team #3. Like I told Tim if you have nothing to lose then prove it…GO DOWN THERE AND KICK THEIR ASS.

Despite a blowout playoff loss to Warren DeLaSalle I just want to congratulate the Port Huron High Big Reds for a fine 7-3 season. The Big Reds were just basically a victim of a tough luck first round playoff grouping having to face such a highly ranked team in state. I don’t like how the MHSAA does their playoffs and the format is more then a little bit unfair. Facing schools twice as big makes it extremely difficult. Either way though, you all had a season to remember and certainly one you can all be proud of. WAY TO GO BIG REDS! The folks at CPHS - Channel 6 are very proud of you…AS IS THE BIG D!!! OF COURSE!
