BIG SHOT BOB = CHEAP SHOT SLOB!!!

Posted by | May 16, 2007 .

horry.jpgBIG SHOT BOB? BIG SHOT ROB? After his recent display on the basketball court, I call him CHEAP SHOT SLOB! San Antonio Spurs bench forward and glorified bum… famous (more infamous now) simply because he makes big shots in the clutch – Robert Horry gave Phoenix Sun’s guard, Steve Nash a hip bump that sent him flying with 18 seconds left in Game 4 of the Spurs/Suns Western Conference Semifinal series 2 nights ago. Although I can’t stand Robert Horry and I totally agree with anyone who believes this was a definite set up cheap shot, I have to say that I’m not totally against what he did. In other words, I take both sides here in these suspensions. Here’s why…

nash.jpgIf I sit here and say that what Horry did had no justification then in a way I am a hypocrite and I am contradicting why I used to cheer for the BAD BOY Detroit Pistons of the late 80’s and early 90’s in the first place so I can’t totally disagree with it. Let’s face it…sports aren’t always played fairly. You play to win. You do whatever it takes to do so. If that means hip checks, elbows, knees, bumps, you do it. Now that being said, I’m not saying go out and beat the living YOU KNOW WHAT out of someone. Still though, it’s a proven fact that teams that win aren’t always the prettiest or the cleanest but they are teams that get the job done any way that they can. I heard someone (I’d dare not reveal who) once say, “If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.” I do agree with that statement…somewhat. If this was a cheap shot, to be honest, it was brilliant because of what the Spurs ended up getting out of it…as cheap as it was. Horry ended up being suspended by the NBA for the next 2 games in this series but more importantly, the incident brought both Suns players – Amare Stoudamire and Boris Diaw off of the bench to back up Nash, who, as mentioned was sent flying into the announce table and couldn’t really defend himself because it all happened so quickly. Horry and the Spurs couldn’t have planned things any better. The NBA automatically suspends any players who leave the bench that aren’t supposed to be on the court. Well, Diaw and Stoudamire both were on the bench. They left it, so now they’ll pay for it.

nash3.JPGI don’t totally disagree with the NBA’s ruling here. Horry definitely deserves 2 games (hell I’d give him 5). Everyone clearly knows that if you leave the bench you get suspended. It’s that simple. Here’s the problem I have. I don’t blame the Suns players one bit for doing it. You have to protect your players. You have to stick up for them. Not only that but this isn’t just any normal player for Phoenix. Nash is their #1 SUPERSTAR. Those kinds of talents must be protected from big goons and cheap shot artists like Horry. The major problem here is it’s like the Spurs have come out as the winners in this incident when they really shouldn’t. Anyone would kick Horry to the curb for 2 games if it meant also ousting both Diaw and Stoudamire (especially the latter) for one. That’s exactly the penalties that were handed down to the Suns but I want to go on record and say that for once, their leaving of the court was justified and they shouldn’t be suspended for it. When you consider how important the role of Stoudamire is for Game 5, this suspension is ludicrous. It all but takes away the Suns’ chances.
nash2.jpgAgain, I understand the NBA and their stance on the issue and the ruling. If they show leniency towards this penalty, then there will always be the “Remember that time when the Suns got off when doing this?” statement. So, the NBA has no real choice on the matter. Make no mistake about it though, as much as I do believe you must do whatever it takes to win, this was certainly a cheap shot in its fullest sense of the word. If you can get away with it…so be it. If you don’t, take your penalty and accept it. Of course, the fact that the media have been talking all week long about how the Spurs are all of a sudden a dirty team doesn’t help the matter. There are a lot of storylines here that could and should work in the Suns favor however, this is just one of those times where the rules have to stand, despite the fact that Phoenix doesn’t deserve to be penalized. This obviously opens the door for the Spurs to take control of the series and they’ll probably win it now that two of the Suns top players have to sit out when they really shouldn’t in the first place. Again, that’s just the nature of sports. The clean team doesn’t always win. The dirty team doesn’t always win. In this case, the dirtier team has a huge advantage going into Game 5. I want to go on record and just say I don’t care for either of these teams. I don’t really want the Suns to win, but it’s evident now…I just want the Spurs to lose!
