BIG RED’S BLOWNOUT BIG

Posted by bigD | May 18, 2008 .

1bigreds.JPGIn announcing the Port Huron High Big Reds vs. the Warren Cousino Patriots baseball game for CPHS, Channel 6 (in Port Huron) last Friday, one thing occurred to me - too often varsity baseball games can be long and drawn out, especially when the game itself is decided after 2 innings. This one certainly was. The Big Reds entered the game having played well the previous weekend in the Petoskey Tournament having made the finals there but they lost out in the last game to the host team and wanted to keep their winning ways going in this game, even though it clearly wasn’t meant to be. The Patriots showed up late following an hour and a half bus ride but they looked like they were clearly the hungrier team despite their late arrival in wiping out the Big Reds - 13-3. Port Huron clearly wasn’t in this game from the get go and it was more then noticeable in the first 2 innings.

phhs1.jpgBig Red SS, Jordan Galanos came into the game being a very highly rated player and was voted onto the Port Huron Times Herald Top 25 list of the areas best baseball players, along with fellow Big Red, Anthony Ingle (Congratulations to both these 2 fine ballplayers). In the first inning, a slowly hit ground ball went under Galanos’ glove and the SS who rarely makes an error made one (despite the fact that I still ruled it a hit). This was an early indication of how the day would go for the Big Reds who never really got on track in the first place. Galanos had a double and a walk in 4 trips to the plate but it clearly wasn’t enough. Big Red starter and ace, Anthony Ingle (also went 1 for 4 with a single and 2 K’s as the cleanup hitter) had control problems early on and it cost him. Ingle made early attempts at throwing high heat to the Patriots in hopes that they’d go chasing but this very patient hitting Cousino team were rewarded for their patience as Ingle got wild at times leading to walks, errors and many unearned runs that in the end (minus the walks of course) weren’t Ingle’s fault anyway. After giving up 7 runs in the first 2 innings the Big Red fate was more then decided already, but the key at this point was would they give up or still play hard?

phhs2.jpgPort Huron kept their desire but the errors continued. I counted at least 4 Big Red throwing errors in the game and not even the hot bat of slugger, Brad Davies could cool off Cousino. Davies had been on a bit of a homerun tear before this game and almost popped another as he doubled off the left field wall at one point. He finished with just that double in 3 at-bats. Other contributors for the Big Reds were Mike Johnson who had an RBI double, Charlie Watson who also had a 2 bagger and the always dangerous Mike Page who was 1 for 1 in 3 trips with a single and he was also hit by a pitch twice.  Two players really stood out and made all the difference for Cousino. The Patriot clean-up man and DH, Phil Gorski led the way at the plate going 3 for 4 with a walk and 3 RBI. Cousino starter, Jimmy Kyewski was the story though in throwing a complete game for Cousino and frustrating the Big Reds in mixing his pitches keeping their timing off.

phhsschool.jpgThe Big Reds fell to 8-8 on the season and 5-2 in their division which still is a respectable record despite this game which I know they’d rather forget. The Big Reds travel to St. Clair on Monday, May 19th and hopefully things will be a bit different. For me it all came down to focus though. It was clear the Big Reds weren’t ready mentally to play this game and they paid for it against a team that just plain wanted it more. But it’s the errors that were so uncharacteristic of a team flirting with .500 that was the story. This is a talented Big Red team and I expect them to make some noise before the season ends. We all have games like this so I have no doubt that Head Coach, Scott Nichols will have them ready for Monday. As I said, everyone has downers at some point in their season. Just look at the Detroit Tigers. GULP! I guess that’s another story. Not to worry Big Reds…it’s a long season. LET’S GET NASTY, PORT HURON!
