It’s been a great week so far in the Detroit sports world. I went to the Tiger game on Tuesday Night and it definitely had a positive outcome. I was in the mood to spend moolah to try to sit in an area close to the action, however, you don’t always bring friends that think the same way as you do so I ended up buying $15 specials in the LF pavillion area (right above the bullpens). At four rows up, for 15 bucks, I really can’t complain so it worked out. You really gotta love seeing such good baseball in the lower deck for 15!!! Obviously it wasn’t my first time at Comerica and it certainly wasn’t my last but I continue to marvel at what a beautiful baseball stadium we really have in Detroit. From the carousel and ferris wheel to the CF fountain and ivy, it’s really something to take in no matter how many times you’ve done so. I still admit to missing the old Tiger Stadium because I loved simply watching a game there but Comerica Park makes you forget the old place for a short time, despite it always being in my memories. Regardless, let’s get to how I saw the action in last night’s terrific 9-7 win over the Mariners.
Jeremy Bonderman started and he got off to his usual/miserable slow start. Ichiro hit the first pitch of the game right past Sean Casey and into right and Sexson eventually came up and crushed a 3-run shot near where I was sitting. I simply couldn’t believe Bondo would throw Sexson something straight and over the plate with 2 strikes. As good as Jeremy is I think it’s obvious he isn’t always the smartest pitcher in the world. Besides 7 strikeouts, he really struggled for much of the night, but lucky for him, the Tigers offense had the gun cocked and ready to fire. Behind almost all of the Tiger bats, ESPECIALLY OMAR INFANTE (Leyland pulled him and in doing so robbed him of a chance for the cycle), Bonderman got more then enough run support. Thanks to Fernando Rodney, again the bullpen was shaky and Jones didn’t exactly have what I’d call a gimme save (it took miracle catches by both Monroe and Ordonez) in the 9th but hey, a win is a win.
Special props must also go out to the crowd in my section who really made the game entertaining. All of the yelling at the Mariner bullpen pitchers (and RF – Raul Ibanez to be specific) as they were warming up was really hilarious and what can I say? Tiger fans are much louder and they certainly get into it more now that the Tigers are competitive again. What a great game. A 9-7 victory with lots of hits, big plays, solid defense and a lively crowd that constantly got on the Mariners. It’s live games like this that make me remember what it was like to cheer for the great Detroit Tiger teams of the 80’s. BLESS YOU BOYS! THE RESERRECTION HAS BEGUN!!!
