ANCHOR BAY TARS THE BIG REDS

Posted by bigD | January 10, 2010 .

It was the first varsity basketball game I did play by play for this year (through CPHS, Channel 6 in Port Huron, Michigan) on Friday Night (Jan. 8th) and it made me remember just how exciting it was to both watch and call basketball in this area. Problem is, it gave me a feeling of déjà vu and that certainly doesn’t bode well for the Port Huron High Big Reds who have been known as underachievers in the past. This night was no different as the Big Reds can partially blame themselves and their own mistakes for going down in defeat here. How many times have we said that in the past? That being said, top to bottom on this Big Red roster, there is a ton of athletic ability, potential and multi-sports athletes so in my opinion, things are going to get better as the season rolls along…just not necessarily on this evening. The Big Reds came out firing on all cylinders with their leading scorer, Forward – David Foster (that’s right, the same Foster who called himself “THE TRUTH” on the Memorial Stadium football field late last year) converting a couple of 3 point trips and with Point Guard – Jarrett Chapman (backup QB on the football team) putting up some decent early numbers. The problem is……their big lead didn’t last and it ended up being nothing more then a big setback in a 63-57 loss to the Anchor Bay Tars.

It’s never easy when you lose MAC Blue Divisional games but it’s even harder to lose them when you partially beat yourself. This was a basketball game of streaks. As mentioned, the Big Reds came out and got a big lead, only to lose it late in the 1st quarter. The 2nd quarter was very close but the Tars ended up pulling away towards the end of the first half. The Tars seemed to have their best success at the end of both quarters of the first half. It seemed to be the Achilles heel of the Big Reds in this one. Despite Foster’s 18 points it just wasn’t enough. After building up a lead in the 3rd quarter, the Tars just plain took control of the game with player of the game, Point Guard – Brandon Padgett (22 points) and Forward – Quintez Gordon (18 points) of the Tars. Both were excellent ball handlers and the Tar offense seemed to be run through them. If it wasn’t Gordon’s size off the dribble then it was Padgett and his fast breaking ability that took down our Big Reds. Credit should also go to the Big Red big man in the middle – Ashwaun Butler. He had a great, physical game (which he needs to do all season long) and he’ll be a big key to the success of this Big Red team as the season goes along.

The Big Reds fell to 2-4 on the young season and play next in Madison Heights Madison on Tuesday. Although it was another loss, the Big Reds can learn a lot from Friday Night. In order to win and be consistent throughout the season at the varsity level, you must bring your “A” game for 32 minutes. Not 8, 16 or 24. When the Big Reds start playing with a “COMPLETE GAME”mentality, they truly will be as BIG as their Big Red nickname would indicate.
