Herman Moore, Lomas Brown, Eddie Murray, Chris Spielman, Barry Sanders and now Calvin Johnson all have one thing in common. They were all great players who played for a bad organization (THE WORST ORGANIZATION IN ALL OF SPORTS) - The Detroit Lions. So with The Big D in attendance at Ford Field last Sunday watching all the ex-Lions greats (not to take anything away from players like Lem Barney and Charlie Sanders but those teams were much better then this one) being introduced at halftime, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for all these tremendous talents who once played for such a joke of a franchise and that was more then evident as the Lions suffered an absolute horrific loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars 38-14. I knew the game was going to be like this. I prepared to watch a blowout just like this but that doesn’t mean you ever truly accept it. Fans were booing (hysterically at times)… brown paper bags were showing up on the heads of fans who just couldn’t take it any longer (brown paper bags aren’t allowed there anymore and many fans were thrown out because of it) and basically most of the crowd left midway through the 3rd quarter. It got so boring at one point in fact that my friend and I were more interested in the guy passed out in the aisle next to us then the actual game itself. This dude was out cold and his friends and fans were piling napkins, cups, tape and anything else they could find on him. From there fans were lining up to actually get their pictures taken with the guy out cold. One gentleman even put his little boy next to the guy and yelled out, “SMILE”. “CLICK!” Is that what the world of Lions football has come down to? Is a passed out drunk more impressive then the Detroit Lions? Do we even care anymore? The answer is no, we don’t care any longer and as I’ve stated in past articles, we as Lions fans have had enough. That’s why we boo. That’s why we leave games in the 3rd quarter and that’s why no one gives a dam. The Lions aren’t worth giving a dam about any longer.
There isn’t really any place to tailgate at Ford Field. That sucks to say the least but the atmosphere on this day was still a pretty good one before this game with the anticipation of Daunte Culpepper starting. YAWN! Big deal right? Exactly. Besides throwing deep long balls to Randy Moss in his Minnesota days what has this guy done? Well, he partied hardy (literally) with teammates and not exactly high class women on a boat on a lake in Minnesota. He sucked ass with the Oakland Raiders and Miami Dolphins and, what a surprise, last Sunday he sucked again. I don’t want to hear anyone say, “He looked pretty good considering Big D.” Considering? CONSIDERING WHAT? Considering the Lions are 0-9? Considering he had 3 days of practice beforehand? Considering the first pass he threw was an interception? I remember thinking…HERE WE GO AGAIN. That INT set up a Jags field goal and that was one of the better defensive showings by the Lions all day long. I’ve never seen a worse Lions D at stopping the run. Fred Taylor ran well all day and made it look easy at times. Maurice Jones-Drew made it look extra easy with 3 red zone TD’s to put the Lions away. Both RB’s looked like world beaters and although Jones-Drew is a top notch back, Fred Taylor was said to be past his prime. Well, not against this joke Lions football team. Not against this joke Lions defense.
Before the game people were talking a lot about the Jags in a negative way. With Mike Peterson and Matt Jones facing team problems and drug charges, it was thought that the Jacksonville game would finally be the first victory for Detroit but are you kidding me? The Lions will be lucky to win one game this season with such a terrible defense and the Jags were far superior to this terribly played, coached and run football team called The Detroit Lions. Culpepper was shaky as you’d expect from a guy who hasn’t seen any action in awhile. He didn’t do much in this game besides heave the long ball to Calvin Johnson (an absolute phenomenal talent stuck on a joke of a team) a couple of times. I thought the Lions game plan was very weak as usual (despite a strong effort from RB – Kevin Smith and his 90+ yards rushing) and I was left wondering why more across the middle patterns weren’t run. Culpepper also forced a lot of passes but he really had no choice with a collapsing pocket all game long. Drew Stanton saw his first bit of action and he falls under the “HE DID WELL, CONSIDERING” category as well. I disagree with that statement like I did for Culpepper and for both QB’s it will come down to a wait and see approach. Culpepper is starting this week in Carolina and we’ll probably see more of Drew Stanton in a QB by committee approach. Why not? It sometimes works in college. Well, this isn’t college is it? I guess if your losing you might as well guarantee your loss with a full QB rotation. Why not completely humiliate yourselves and play Drew Henson? Get him in the mix, Rod. Rotate all 3 of them why don’t you?
I am going to contradict myself and just say that despite the fact that I still cheer for this team because they are my team, I want them to lose every game, go 0-16 or 1-15 (whatever it takes to get the top draft choice) and have a strong draft. With all the draft picks from the Roy Williams trade they have a real opportunity here. THEY BETER DAM WELL GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME. After seeing the game live on Sunday it’s obvious how far behind the rest of the league this team is. IN ROD WE DON’T TRUST. Unfortunately the man we have to trust in has the last name – Ford. We have to believe he’ll find the right GM this time (even though he probably won’t). From there we have to hope the GM will find the right coach after Marinelli gets fired and takes all of his brutal losses with him. The players aren’t buying into anything he says or does anymore and why would they? The Lions are 0-9 and as far as I am concerned have no shot at winning a single game.
It was a brutal game to watch live. In fact it was one of the most brutal football games I have ever witnessed and that’s saying something because I absolutely love live football. With the Wolverines doing nothing this season and the Lions even worse then that, it’s really a miserable time to be a football fan in the state of Michigan. What about MSU? So what? What an absolutely terrible game on Sunday and Coach Marinelli, William Clay Ford and the entire Detroit Lions organization have no one to blame but themselves. To echo the fans sentiment upon leaving Ford Field last week – “BOOOOOOO.” That says it all. Well almost. KNOCK, KNOCK! WHO’S THERE? OWEN. OWEN WHO? LIONS OH and 16! That joke just isn’t funny…for more reasons then one.
