Is Michael Vick innocent? Is he guilty? After learning about some of the details in this apparent dog fighting case I have to say that as a person, I don’t think I care much about that question any longer. As an NFLer though, I have to say that there is no single player who has excited me more then Vick with the exception of perhaps Barry Sanders. A man that can throw so far, run so fast and be so extremely gifted is an absolute pleasure to watch. But is he a decent… human being? I guess that question is still to be debated. One of Vick’s co-defendants in the dog fighting conspiracy case (Tony Taylor) has decided that he doesn’t want to wait for trial but instead he is attempting to go the plea bargain hearing route. The hearing was added on Friday, 3 days after the 3 other defendants pleaded not guilty. Vick is scheduled for trial on Nov. 26th. Prosecutors are saying that the 34 year old Taylor found Vick’s Surry County property and formed the “Bad Newz Kennels†dogfighting enterprise. Bad Newz Kennels? Is it just me or is there something wrong with the mere name of that place? Dog fighting at Bad Newz Kennels? Come on…how ludicrous. Give me a break guys! Taylor has also been accused of helping to purchase pit bulls and he allegedly killed 2 dogs that did poorly in pre-fights. The 4 men were initially charged on July 17th. The maximum punishment for the crime is 5 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000. Apparently, the dog fights offered rewards of up to $26,000 per fight and many dogs were reportedly executed for underperforming by drowning, hanging and other brutal means.
So we now know the charges but now the most important thing about the case…What does this now do to Michael Vick, the Atlanta Falcons and the future? The story has caused a public outrage with Vick losing most of his endorsement deals and many of his fans. The NFL is currently investigating and although Commissioner, Roger Goodell won’t say either way what the league’s stance is on the issue, he has banned Michael Vick from Falcons training camp and with the trial set for Nov. 26th it makes you wonder if Vick will even play at all this season or even ever again depending on the validity of the charges.
The Falcons as an organization have insisted that they had no indication that Vick was involved in dogfighting of any kind but apparently there were warning signs in the past which indeed makes you wonder. Vick has mentioned dogs and kennels in the past but it was thought that he was doing it in a friendly way as simply a pet owner with the desire to breed dogs. According to the feds, Vick began “Bad Newz Kennels†in rural Virginia almost immediately after being both drafted and signed by the Falcons. My hats off to the way the Falcons players have handled the situation. “He’s like a brother,” Falcons RB, Warrick Dunn said. “It was definitely a surprise to me.” Although often criticized for not having much of an NFL passing game, Vick has had a tremendously exciting career up to this point. He led Virginia Tech to the national championship game as a red shirt freshman, almost single-handedly beating Florida State in the Sugar Bowl. He was favored to win the Heisman as a sophomore, but he had an ankle injury. He has had limited success as a pro but has been a human highlight film and is more then a pleasure to watch week in and week out.
The strangest thing about all of this is how Vick is described by other people. Many have already came to his support claiming what a kind, caring and giving guy with a big heart he is. So behind all of the compliments about Vick as a person…comes one of the most shocking and appalling cases out there. Vick isn’t known as a dominating presence in the locker room either. It’s said he keeps largely to himself and he has a close circle of friends. Last year, as Marcus Vick prepared for the NFL draft after getting kicked out of Virginia Tech for repeated misbehavior, Michael tried to be a strong influence towards him. Michael reportedly told his little brother to clean up his act and start taking responsibility for his actions. This is all fine and dandy but Michael… how about taking some responsibility for your own. The strange thing is, this is often the case. Too many times we’ve seen this happen. Such a nice person to everyone on the inside but in the outside world something else happens which is so completely unlike the individual. It’s hiding. It’s out there. In Vick’s case let’s hope he is as innocent as he claims. I hope it for the Falcons, I hope it for the NFL (so that they don’t lose their most exciting player), I hope if for the fans (for the same reasons) but most of all, I hope so for Michael Vick, who seems to have trouble follow him and could just be the most misunderstood NFL player out there. WHO LET THE DAWGS OUT? Perhaps Michael Vick should have, instead of possibly being behind illegal dog fighting. And trust me, that IS something to bark about.
